Loving rebellion. For a better world.

Our mission

At Deadwood we work relentlessly to revitalize and breath a sense of edge into ethical fashion. We do this by creating a high-quality lifestyle brand based on sustainability, integrity and loving rebellion. For a better world. Our vision?
Iconic lifestyle products, minimal harm to the planet, and a community of people inspired to live more conscious lives. Ever since the beginning, Deadwood has been a celebration of free spiritedness and rebellion against worn out dogmas. The core of the brand will always be anti-establishment and counter culture. Using mainly recycled materials, leather in particular, each garment combines punk inspired aesthetics with a green cause.

Our leather products are made from rescued deadstock skins, repurposed vintage clothing and upcycled post-production waste.

The story

The company was founded in 2012 by Carl Ollson and Felix von Bahder. The two buddies met in a jeans shop in Stockholm a couple years earlier and quickly they began dreaming about creating a store concept of their own. Said and done, soon they opened their vintage shop, a place where they could cultivate their touch for timeless design and their love for vintage clothing. They decided to call the shop Deadwood. The word had a good ring to it as it combined a sharp tone with something earthier. The fact that it´s the name of an old Native American territory in Sorth Dakota, later a gunslinger town with an interesting story of its own, mattered less. Next step; a line of jackets made from repurposed vintage garments, a first small dive into changing what needed to be changed! The fashion industry is one of the dirtiest in the world and Deadwood found a way of doing things differently.

The Deadwood way

Our leather products are made from rescued deadstock skins, repurposed vintage clothing and upcycled post-production waste. That means for some of our production we actually chop up old leather garments that have reached their expiration date in terms of style and turn them into new beautiful jackets and accessories with a vintage soul. This not only gives the product a soft worn-in feel but also makes it a far more sustainable alternative to the average newly produced leather garment. Other times we use offcuts from the garment industry or rejected skins from the tanneries. An increased number of cut-lines in each garment enable us to use what otherwise would have gone to waste. And it adds character!

Deadwood’s approach is far from fast fashion and anxious design. We will never be about reinventing fashion. Instead, Deadwood sets out to reinvent how we think about fashion. We are about rebooting iconic styles, gently updating them with a modern touch and inspiring customers to buy and wear consciously. Our collections are updated bi-annually and contain a large core of iconic carry-over styles, all in line with our idea of slow fashion. A Deadwood collection includes Women’s, Men’s and Unisex lines. In 2017 the company also launched its first Kid’s collection. Deadwood is now available at the official online shop, more than 150 retailers around the World and can also be purchased in the flagship store at Bergsunds Strand 32 in Hornstull, Stockholm.

You might wonder…

Are Deadwood leather jackets environmentally sustainable?
In short, they are better than all the rest! *humming Tina Turner’s goldie* Deadwood’s leather jackets are made of 100% recycled leather which is our way to contribute to a saner fashion industry. However, the question is difficult to answer since the concept of “sustainability” depends on so many factors. Would it be possible to scale up our production into infinity? No, obviously our production relies on the previous production of leather garments (which is usually quite strenuous on the environment). But we believe it’s always a good thing to make use of existing resources that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Are there any side effects negative for the environment?
Yes, of course there are. Nobody’s perfect. We are not zero polluting; no business or person is. That being said, compared to a new leather garment from any brand out there (or a garment made from cotton or polyester for that matter), our products are made from 100% recycled leather which cuts the impact on the environment into only a fraction. That’s why we think our project is good for the world!

How should I as a vegan think about Deadwood leather products?
We can’t tell you what to think or feel about anything, but we CAN tell you that we have a lot of vegan friends who are really happy they found Deadwood. Millions of tons of leather already exist out there. Instead of throwing away ugly garments or leather offcuts and then kill new animals for their hide in order to create new more “fashionable” products, Deadwood skips the bloody middle step and takes it directly from grave to cradle, crafting existing material into stunning new products without a single animal coming to harm in between.

Where is your production located?
When Carl and Felix were working with vintage clothing, they spent a lot of time in the vintage markets of Bangkok, Thailand. Besides being one of the coolest cities we’ve ever been to Bangkok also hosts some of the best markets and supplies of used clothing, materials and antiques in the world. Therefore it was natural this was where the atelier was to be located, close enough to huge stockpiles of leather goods yearning to be recycled into new beautiful leather jackets. Now we have allocated a large portion of our production to northern India, first of all because of the immense expertise in the area and teaming up with manufacturers who share our passion to change the clothing industry to the better. Secondly our co-founder Felix has always held a special place in his heart for the sub-continent and its culture. The buzzling everyday life in India gives food for creativity but also, due to the country’s environmental and humanitarian challenges, it energizes our will to make a change!
